Now I'm Forced To Ask

How much of the reporting on events in NOLA was accurate?

Meaning,

  1. How wide spread was the looting?
  2. Was the looting, looting or attempts to get food?
  3. Of the people who stayed, were they mainly poor with no way out? Or those who wanted to protect property? Or those who were protecting the sick and elderly? Or those who were protecting their animals?
  4. Where the reports of shooting at emergency workers accurate?
  5. Did NOLA policemen really quit?

It'll probably be a long time yet before we can strain out most of the myths.

Re Q2, the best way to "protect" the elderly was to get them the hells out if it was at all possible. And what defiantly ignorant/crazy foo would stick around to "protect" his *property* from a cat 5 hurricane? With WHAT, pray tell? Ah, well, NOLA doesn't have the market cornered on dumbasses. Their frat has chapters in every town around the globe.

p.s. not to say we should sit around and let the dumbasses die from starvation/poisoning/disease/inability to breathe underwater.

p.p.s. I wonder if some of them shots on NOLA popo was a nasty payback for decades of the nastiest corruption (shots fired while police was in the act of rescue, well, that's criminally insane)

All I can say is tv showed liberating, but decribe it as looting; when Blacks were involved;and surving when whites were involved.I remenber when UofM won the NCAA bball Ann Arbor had destruction of property and rape on a wide scale but the media chalk it up to over zealous students.Only way I found out was my Son was there.

p.p.p.s. "dumbass" refers to those who stayed on purpose, not ones who had no reasonable means to escape.

Murder and rape, fact or fiction?

While there are still stories to be reported, it bears noting that many of these claims appear to have come from women, children and men inside the SuperDome. And, at this point, survival trumps justice in the pecking order. A full accounting must be done...not just for the curiousity of those outside, or for the historical record, but precisely for the victims of this tragedy/travesty.

I thought about this gang issue when this first jumped off. It occured to me that some things wouldn't stop - but regardless of what went down in the Superdome, it was imperative that security officers be in the house. I was born in the Bronx and have to Yankee Stadium countless times where crowds get out of hand. Were it not for the police, there are countless incidents that could end tragically. We know this to be the case across the nation and especially in Europe. Crowds do not behave well. Terrified crowds with no lights, food, water or bathrooms cannot be expected to behave any better than college students in ann arbor.

it will be awhile before we know what went down - but the implications are that folks will be scarred for years to come - and will require comprehensive support services to heal the body and mind, especially for those remaining along the Gulf and in the Delta.
