Today's version of The Black Slate deals with a question Gwen Ifill asked during the Vice-Presidential debate about rates of HIV/AIDS among African American women. I'd originally written something totally different, but I scrapped it. I'm not sure if I got the ending right but this version is much better.
I'll be reviewing Cornel West's DEMOCRACY MATTERS this Sunday in the Washington Post.
LKS,
Excellent piece!!!!!!!!!!

Time was when white politicians at least gave lip service to issues in the African American community. It's stunning to see these folks not even giving a little bit of a damn about this issue. And what about poverty? When was the last time anybody talked about fighting poverty? What about infant mortality? Death rates from disease? Weren't they supposed to be the compassionate conservatives?
Great article. Needed to be written. I just wish it had a wider audience.

I loved it. By the way, there was some news traffic about Ifill's question, although not nearly enough. I argued in my blog that reporters should have taken that and similarly ignored issues up in subseqent debates and interview opportunities, but as you've noted, that hasn't happened.
