(Brief) Thoughts on Immigration Reform

Today Bush made only the second decision I agreed with. The first was the decision to go after Osama Bin Laden back in 2001. Today's decision to give immigrants at least temporary legal status was something that should've been done a long time ago. While some are (probably accurately) castigating him for catering to the Latino vote, it doesn't really matter to me for two reasons. The first is that the policy goes in the right direction. The Democrats support a neutered Affirmative Action largely because of their black constituency...are we to castigate them for the same thing? To reiterate...it's about POLICY.

The second reason? Latinos won't be voting for Bush any time soon. With the notable exception of the anti-Castro Cubans in Florida.

I think you're wrong on this one.
Giving corporations the right to hire cheap Mexican labor is nothing but a corporate boondogle. I don't often agree with the cheap labor conservatives but Michael King (of all people) But he got it right.

"...I can safely tell you that given a proper amount of money to live on, there aren't jobs that Americans won't do. However, Americans will not live on two or three dollars an hour, and cram twenty people into an apartment.
The Administration neglects to see that point.
This will create a second class worker system that is only steps removed from slavery."

I can't agree with the man about the weather but even a broken clock is right twice. This is one of those times.

The main point I think is that brothers and sisters from Mexico ARE BEING HIRED ALREADY! So given this fact, what do you do? I don't think Bush went far enough at all. But in THIS case I think it is a good first step. Hopefully one that will be improved upon in the future.
